About Us

Today, many New Jersey funeral homes are owned by mega-corporations listed on the national stock exchanges, or are part of a multi location chain of funeral homes, with managers, not the owners, running the day to day operations. Costello-Runyon Funeral Home is bucking the trend by remaining a local family business. Jay Costello feels strongly that he and his staff can serve the families of the Metuchen-Edison area better by staying family owned and operated. Due to the long standing integrity and the outstanding efforts of a dedicated staff, the service and facilities of the Costello-Runyon Funeral Home are second to none.

Joseph V. Costello III is a fourth generation funeral director. His grandfather Joseph V. Costello Sr. took over his uncle's business, "Thomas F. Burke Funeral Directors" in 1929, when Thomas F. Burke passed away. The business, located in nearby Perth Amboy, was passed onto the next generation when Joseph V. Costello Jr. "Bud" entered the family business in 1962. Bud managed the business in Perth Amboy, as well as expanding into Woodbridge Township.

After graduating from high school in 1980, Jay immediately knew his calling was to follow the family tradition and enter into mortuary school. Jay learned every aspect of the funeral business while working for his father in the family business as well as helping Fred and Barbaralee at the Runyon Mortuary in Metuchen. When Mr. and Mrs. Runyon decided to sell the funeral home it was Jay and his wife Suzanne they chose to sell it to.
