Phyllis Coward (nee Schwalje) died peacefully on May 10, 2017 in Marietta, GA at the age of 78.
Phyllis is survived by her loving husband, Robert H. Coward of Port St. Lucie, FL; children Robert (Kelley) of Alexandria, VA, Cheryl English of Marietta, GA, James (Joanne) of Toms River, NJ, Cyndy Lobb (Daniel) of Marietta, GA; grandchildren Kristin, Caryn, Jessica, Bobby, Kelley, Spencer, Nick, Jack, and Nate; sister Rita Miller (Jim) of Palm Coast, FL; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Philip and Rita Schwalje, and her brother, Philip Nicholas Schwalje, Jr.
Phyllis was born on March 31, 1939. She graduated from St. Peter's High School in 1957 and attended Chestnut Hill, College. She married Robert in 1960, and they raised four children in Metuchen and Lakewood, NJ. After a career as a tax advisor and regional manager for H&R Block, she and Bob retired to Florida. They spent much of the last several years near their daughters in Marietta, GA.
Phyllis was a loving mother and grandmother and a loyal friend, maintaining many friendships for more than 60 years. She adored her grandchildren, and enjoyed travelling to see family and friends, both all over the US as well as internationally. She was often found with her nose in a good paperback book. She was an active and dedicated member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Port St. Lucie, FL.
A viewing is scheduled for 7-9 pm Sunday, May 14, 2017, at Costello-Runyon Funeral Home in Metuchen, NJ. A funeral mass is scheduled for 10:15 am Monday, May 15, 2017, at St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral, also in Metuchen, with a reception to follow. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Phyllis's life.
