Rita Olivia Ryan (nee Wenzel), 85, of Metuchen, died peacefully on October 9, 2017 at home with her family at her side.
Born and raised in Belleville, IL, she was the youngest of four. After marrying her husband James whom she met when volunteering for the United Service Organization, the family moved to East Islip, Long Island where she was a parishioner and member of the Rosary Altar Society at St. Mary's. In 1974 the family moved to Edison, NJ before moving to Metuchen in 1986 where she became a parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral in Metuchen. She loved to bake, share stories, read, & watch the Hallmark channel, but most of all she loved spending time with her family.
She is predeceased by her husband, James J. Ryan II (d.1981); her parents, Frank & Mary Wenzel; three brothers, Frank, Norbert, & Russell Wenzel; & sister-in-law, Tish Wenzel.
She is survived by her six children, Lynda Ryan of Danville, CA, Thomas Ryan & wife Heather Muldoon of Livingston, MT, Tess McCormack of Metuchen, James J. Ryan III & wife Margaret of Hillsborough, Frank Ryan & partner Jeff Dispensa of Long Branch, & Michael Ryan of Portland, OR; ten grandchildren, Mikael Estrada, Jesse Estrada & wife Treena, Raini & Shayne Ryan, Cory McCormack & fiancée Kristin Saccente, Ryan & Kerre McCormack, Emma, Kiara & Alanna Ryan; & three great-grandchildren, Lily & Willow McCormack & Sonny James Estrada; two sister-in-laws, Rita & Mary Wenzel both of Belleville, IL; Kevin & Kelli Wenzel, & children Jack & Kate as well as many other beloved nieces, nephews & dear friends of East Islip; & her special caregivers, Barbara & Mirka.
The family is also truly grateful to all the caregivers at the Venetian, Hartwyck, JFK, Care One, & Haven Hospice.
Visitation will take place on Thursday, October 12 from 5-7 pm. at the Costello-Runyon Funeral Home, 568 Middlesex Ave. (RT 27) Metuchen. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral in Metuchen at 9:00 am on Friday, October 13. Interment will follow at Saint Gertrude Cemetery, Colonia.
