W. Finley Klaas, 72, of Metuchen, NJ died on Saturday, October 7, 2017 at home surrounded by his loving family.
Born on April 14, 1945 in Plainfield, Finley resided in South Plainfield before moving to Metuchen in 1986.
He was a graduate of DePauw University in Green Castle, IN where he received a degree in 1967. He was a US Army veteran who served one tour of duty in Vietnam and was honorably discharged. Finley was the co-owner of Testfabrics in West Pittston, PA, a second generation company founded by his father in the 1930’s that served special interest international textile markets.
Finley married the love of his life, Doris Autry, in June 1981 in Greensboro, NC and together they raised three sons. He was an active member of the Metuchen Branch YMCA in his neighborhood where he began every morning swimming 1000-yard backstroke laps in the pool. He also participated in the YMCA Masters Swim Program in Metuchen for several years. Later, Finley discovered his love of home brewing and was a founding member of the Durty Desmond International Pub Crawl Team. Finley had a great love for the time his family spent together in Vermont at the family Ferguson Camp where he served as the Treasurer of the Elfin Lake Corporation for many years. He was an avid reader and had an unquenchable thirst for all types of history.
Finley was predeceased by his parents Werner and Josephine Klaas and his father-in-law and mother-in-law Stacy and Lillian Autry. He is survived by his wife Doris (nee Autry) to whom he was married for thirty-six years and three sons: Jeremy A. (Olivia); Stuart E. (Amy) and Brandon S.
