Alfonse M. Mattia, 69, of Edison died on Sunday, October 2, 2011 at Robert Wood Johnson University Medical Center in New Brunswick.
Born in Newark, he has resided in Edison for 47 years, with summer residences in Mantoloking and, most recently, Sea Bright, NJ. Alfonse could also be found frequently on the island of Barbados.
He was a graduate of Rider College and later the Harvard Business School OPM Program (1982-1984).
Alfonse was a CPA and a Founding Partner of Amper, Politziner and Mattia, the firm known today as EisnerAmper. He was a visionary in the accounting industry and served on the AICPA's "Group of 100", a national group formed to protect the public interest and integrity of the CPA profession. He was instrumental in developing the NJSCPA's "More Than Just Numbers" program, created to educate children regarding career opportunities in accounting.
Alfonse was a member of the AICPA, NJSCPA, the Columbus Club, the Harvard Business School Club of New York, and the Metuchen Golf and Country Club. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Sun National Bank, Rider University and numerous other charities and businesses over the years.
Surviving are his former wife of 43 years Joan Hamblin Mattia, sons Michael Mattia and his wife Stacy of West Windsor and Stephen V. Mattia of Point Pleasant, a daughter Allison Mattia Roberts and her husband Pat of High Bridge, a brother Robert A. Mattia of Newton, four grandchildren David and Kaitlynn Mattia, and Sophia and Ryder Roberts.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Thursday, October 6, 2011 at 10:15 AM at St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral Metuchen. Visitation is Wednesday 5-8 PM at The Costello-Runyon Funeral Home 568 Middlesex Ave. (RT 27) Metuchen (costello-runyon.com).
In lieu of flowers or donations, Alfonse would like you to take your family or closest friends out to dinner, tell them you love them, and possibly tell a funny "Al Mattia" story.
