Bernard F. Swoboda, 89, of Metuchen died on Thursday, February 3, 2011 at Roosevelt Care Center in Edison.
Born in Perth Amboy, he resided in Metuchen since 1956.
He was a sheet metal worker with Sheet Metal Workers Local Union 27 for 40 years prior to his retirement in 1984.
Bern was a US Navy Veteran of World War II, serving on Patrol Craft 1225. He was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral in Metuchen and a member of The Knights of Columbus Middlesex Council #857 in Woodbridge.
Bern will be remembered as an honest, hard working and dedicated family man. He enjoyed traveling to reunions with his shipmates, fishing, bowling and gardening.
Bern lovingly cared for his wife, Rae Acciani Swoboda, before her passing from Alzheimer's in 2003. He was also predeceased by four brothers, John, Walter, Joseph and Anthony, who were his closest friends.
Surviving are two sons and their wives Bernard P. and Elaine of East Brunswick, Paul T. and Vivian of Arlington, MA, a daughter and her husband Ann and Craig Major of Metuchen; six grandchildren Judy Valdivielso of Fairfax, VA; Christine Bailey of Boston, MA, Ken Swoboda and Bethany Gentile of East Brunswick, Brian and Kevin Major of Metuchen; four great-grandchildren, Carl and Ben Valdivielso, Luke and Will Bailey and many nieces and nephews.
Services will take place on Tuesday February 8, 2011, at 9:45 AM from the Costello-Runyon Funeral Home 568 Middlesex Ave. (RT 27) Metuchen (costello-runyon.com), followed by a 10:15 AM Mass of the Resurrection at St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral, interment is at Resurrection Burial Park in Piscataway. Visitation is Monday 2-4 & 7-9.
