Carmel (Candy) McGovern, 87, passed away on Sunday, February 25, 2018, at the Mary Anne Hale Pavilion Haven Hospice, Edison, N.J.
She was born in Brooklyn, NY, on February 3, 1931, to the late Joseph R. Quinn and Josephine (Powers) Quinn. Candy grew up in Flushing, NY and graduated from Flushing High School in 1948 and went on to model fur coats in NYC. She met the love of her life, Phil, in 1947 at a church dance after he was discharged from the US Navy.
Candy and Phil were married in 1953 and briefly lived in Wantagh, NY, before moving to Iselin in 1962, where they raised their four children.
She was a sales associate for Abraham & Straus, Woodbridge Center, for 20 years, retiring in 1991. Candy was especially proud and blessed that all her children graduated from Seton Hall University, South Orange, and all were married in the Immaculate Conception Chapel at Seton Hall University. But most of all, she loved life and enjoyed spending family time with Phil, their children and grandchildren. She was a beautiful person who made everyone she met feel special.
Candy and her late husband were avid Yankees fans. Candy was a communicant of St. Cecelia Church, Iselin, for 55 years, where she was a member of the Rosary Society.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 64 years, Philip J. McGovern (d.2017), her precious son Christopher P. McGovern (d.1995), her precious daughter, Marianne Engel (d.2006), her sister Rosemary Makris (d.1983). She is survived by her loving daughters and son-in-laws Carolyn and Greg Wojcik of Manalapan and Trish and Bill Allen of Howell, son-in-law Neil Engel and daughter-in-law Rosemary McGovern; her brother and sister-in-law Joseph and Anne Quinn of Smithtown, NY; her cherished grandchildren Philip and Katie Engel, Melissa and Liam Allen, and many caring nieces, nephews and cousins.
