Caroline Hilary (Dempster) King, 83, of High Bar Harbor, Long Beach Island, went to be with her Lord on Monday, October 1, 2018.

Born in Liverpool, England she came to the US in 1948 and lived briefly in Orange and then graduated from Belleville High School. She became a US Citizen in 1956. She later resided in Piscataway and Edison, before moving to High Bar Harbor in 1998. Hilary earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees while raising her family. She cherished her 22 years as a librarian and educator at Middlesex High School. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Metuchen for many years and later joined Zion Lutheran Church in Barnegat Light. She volunteered for many organizations within the church. She was passionate about books, learning, music, and enjoyed singing in the church choir. Her true joy was being with her family who adored her.

She is predeceased by her son, Douglas Alan, and brother, Robert James Dempster.

Daughter of James Dougall and Ethel (Pearce) Dempster, she is survived by her high school sweetheart and husband of 62 years, Kenneth of High Bar Harbor; three children, Caroline “Susan” of Forest Hill, MD & her fiancé Ray Cole, Kenneth “Jeffrey” of Metuchen, & Roger Andrew & his wife Michelle of Waxhaw, NC; seven grandchildren, Ryan Rate & his wife Kimberly, Kevin Rate & his fiancée Avery Beck, Kyle Rate & his wife Kimberly, Emily Rate, Kara King, Alexa King, & Isaiah King; 2 great-grandchildren, Madison & Mackenzie Rate; & many relatives in the US and England. Because of her great energy and passion for life, Hilary will also be dearly missed by countless friends and colleagues.

At Hilary’s request a private, family graveside committal will take place at the First Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Metuchen.
