Elsie Hickey

April 19, 1929 - January 8, 2019
Born in Brooklyn, NY
Resided in Metuchen, NJ

Elsie Hickey, 89, of Metuchen, died on Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at her home.

She was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Eduardo De Vido and Maria Zanucco De Vido, both of whom immigrated from San Vito di Cadore, in the province of Belluno, Italy, at the turn of the 20th century. The family first settled in Brooklyn, but then followed fellow immigrants from San Vito to Clifton, New Jersey, where Elsie attended and graduated from Clifton High School. At the conclusion of World War II, Elsie married Joseph Hickey, a decorated World War II veteran who had received the Bronze Star, and the couple had a daughter, Karen.

Above all, Elsie was a loving, kind, and thoughtful woman who possessed a great sense of humor. She will be missed by her family and many dear friends.

Elsie was also a Master Gardner and was very involved in the Metuchen Garden Club (MGC). She joined in 1965, celebrating 54 years in the club. She was President from 1969-1971, treasurer, and had served co-chair of the Junior Gardening since September of 1967. She was the Chair of Horticulture for many years and in June 1968 she entered the East Brunswick Flower Show and won fifteen awards for Horticulture. She was a member of both the National Garden Club Gardening Consultants and Accredited Landscape Design Consultants. She loved presenting programs over the years to her fellow GCMers on flower arranging. Elsie had been known to many as an expert in her fields, and will be truly missed.

In addition, she was a member of the Monmouth, New Jersey and Garden State Chapters of The Embroiders’ Guild of America, The American Needlepoint Guild, Garden State Quilters, The Metuchen-Edison Women’s Club, The Chevron Retirees Association, and many other organizations in which she remained active until her death.

A lifelong learner, Elsie was an accomplished crafter, a fantastic cook and baker, avid reader, and old movie buff. She was an award-winning beaded jewelry artist. She was well known for her famous Irish soda bread

She is predeceased by her loving husband, Joseph (d.2009), and loving daughter and best friend, Karen Collins (d.2011).

She is survived by her devoted son-in-law, John Collins, Jr. of Milltown and his fiancé Kathy Heilman of Milltown; a brother, Alfredo De Vido and his wife Catherine of New York City; nephews Roberto De Vido of Singapore and Antonio of Doylestown, Pennsylvania; grandnephews Antonio A. De Vido and Taiyo Nagai; grandniece, Saya Nagai; and Granddog Brodie.

During Karen’s life and following her death, Elsie enjoyed spending holidays and celebrations with, and will be sorely missed by, Cathy Diem of New Brunswick, and her sons Will Kaplan of Milltown and Karen’s Godson Matthew Kaplan of New Brunswick.

A gathering will take place on Monday, January 14, 2019 at 9:45 am at the Costello-Runyon Funeral Home, 568 Middlesex Ave. (Rt. 27), Metuchen followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:15 am at St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral, Metuchen. Interment will take place at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown.

Visitation will take place on Sunday from 2-5 pm. There will be a brief service at 4:30 pm and an opportunity for friends to share memories of Elsie.
