On January 10, 2021, Gerard Anthony LaPointe was called to heaven to be with his wife, Patricia. He died peacefully at home from natural causes.
Jerry was born on June 5, 1940, to Emma (nee Runfola) and Charles LaPointe in the St. George section of Staten Island, NY. He was a longtime resident of Metuchen and a member of St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral Parish, where he was active as the head lector for over 45 years. After attending Our Lady of Good Counsel School and the Augustinian Academy, he graduated from Trenton Catholic High School. While working in regulatory compliance of hazardous materials, he earned his undergraduate degree at night from Rutgers University. Always valuing education for himself and his children, he later earned his master’s degree from Montclair University and went on to start his own training and consulting firm.
Jerry had a zest for life that was shared with his family and friends, especially the love of his life, Patricia, to whom he was married for almost 53 years, his 7 children and their spouses, and his 20 grandchildren. He shared with all of them and others his passions for food, for acting, and for singing. Many of his favorite traditions included family and food, like the famous New Year’s Eve party that he and Patty hosted for over 50 years - with his classic fried chicken. His daily phone calls to catch up with his children often started with, “So what’s for dinner?” And then there were the Saturday morning pancakes - if you know, you know!
Jerry discovered a love for acting while he was serving in the Army and stationed in Chicago. He returned to the stage in his later years, acting with family members at the Moorestown Theater Company. Jerry was very active in the community and the parish. He coached little league baseball and basketball. He was a fan of Rutgers sports, the Giants, Yankees, Knicks, and especially of his grandchildren’s sports and activities!
He is survived by his children: Christy McHale (Tom), Michael LaPointe (Christi Farina), Karen Capron (Frank), Bob LaPointe (Lauren), Janine Billman (Rich), Dorothy Sheker (Tom), and Daniel LaPointe (Toni). He is also survived by his sister Celeste (Ted Wisniewski), and his large, loving extended Poandl, LaPointe, and Runfola families.
Jerry was Grandpa to 20 grandchildren: Julia, Brendan, Patrick, Colin (McHale), Frankie, Anna, Emma, Alana, Daniel (Capron), Sophia, Luke, Charles (LaPointe), Matthew, Michael, Kathryn (Billman), Makayla, Daniel, Nathan, Caroline (Sheker), and the newest one, Joseph Gerard (LaPointe).
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Monday, January 18th at 10:15am at St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral (live stream: https://diometuchen.org/cathedral-livestream
