John P. McCabe, 94, passed away on Saturday, February 29, 2020 at The Mary Anne Hale Pavilion of Haven Hospice at JFK Medical Center in Edison.

John was born in Virginia, County Cavan Ireland to the late Patrick and Mary McCabe. He came to America in February 1948 and lived in Staten Island. He later moved to Jersey City in 1958, Metuchen in 1993, and Clara Barton in 2019. John was a United States Army Veteran during the Korean War and was part of the 82nd Airborne Division. John worked at Atlantic Mutual Insurance Company in NYC and the Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company. He was a former Lector, Eucharistic Minister, and Parishioner at St. Aedan’s Church in Jersey City and former parishioner at St. Francis Cathedral in Metuchen. John was a member of the American Legion in Jersey City. His wife, Mary, and himself loved to walk around Metuchen whenever they had time & he also was an avid reader.

John is predeceased by his sons, James (2019) and Michael (1992); and his siblings, Joseph, Bridget, James, Desmond, Sr. Mary Angelina, and Ann Philomena.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary (McKnight); his 2 sons, John and his wife Terry of Jackson & Thomas and his wife Elizabeth of Edison; his daughter, Maureen Szczuplak and her husband Walter of Hazlet; his daughter in law, Halina of Wallington; 10 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren; 4 siblings, Rose of Kearny, Patrick of England, Lawrence of Canada, and Bernadette in Co. Cavan, Ireland; and many nieces and nephews in the US, Ireland, England, and Canada.

The funeral will be held on Tuesday, March 3, 2020 at 9:45am from the Costello-Runyon Funeral Home, 568 Middlesex Avenue, Metuchen followed by a 10:15am Funeral Mass at St. Francis Cathedral, Metuchen. Visitation will be on Tuesday prior to the funeral from 8:45am to 9:45am at the funeral home.
