Joseph Ellsworth Switras, Sr., 84, of Metuchen died on Wednesday, September 3, 2008 at JFK Medical Center in Edison.
Born in Nanticoke, PA he resided in Metuchen for 60 years.
He was a US Navy Veteran of World War II serving on the USS Smart in the Atlantic Theater and the USS Duluth in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church in Edison. He was also a member of The BPO of Elks Lodge 1914, the VFW Post 848 and the American Legion Fugel Humer Post 65 all in Metuchen
He was very mechanically inclined and a millwright by trade, he had been employed by GM- Delco battery for 22 years before his retirement, prior he had been employed by Ford Motor Co.
He was predeceased by three younger brothers Matthew, George and Leonard Switras.
Surviving are his wife, of 64 years, the former Vera Uhrin, two sons Dr. Joseph E. Switras, Jr. of Fairmont MN, Kenneth P. Switras of Morro Bay, CA., a daughter Mary E. Switras of Anoka, MN, five grandchildren Susan, Joseph E. III, Anne, Catherine and Derrek and two great grandchildren Jordan and Iris.
Services will be held on Tuesday, September 9, 2008 at 9:15 AM from the Costello-Runyon Funeral Home 568 Middlesex Ave. (RT 27) Metuchen (www.costello-runyon.com), followed by a 10:00 AM Devine Liturgy at St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church in Edison, interment is at Hillside Cemetery in Metuchen.
Visitation is Sunday and Monday 2-4 & 7-9. Parastas will be held on Monday at 3:00 PM.
