Obituary

It saddens us to announce that our beloved mother, Kathleen Ann Mahon (nee Smith), died of complications from ALS on Saturday, August 10, 2019. Kathleen, who was 86 yrs. old, had a long and fulfilling life and was a long-term resident of Edison, New Jersey.

Kathleen was born on March 21, 1933, in New York and was the daughter of the late Hugh and Mary Smith (nee Corr). She graduated from James Monroe High School, Bronx, NY and married the love of her life, John J. Mahon, in 1955. After living in Germany while her husband served in the Army, they eventually settled in Edison, New Jersey where they raised their family. They were active members of St. Francis Parish for over 50 years.

Kathleen was full of life and an active member of the Edison Library Book Club, the Hunt and Riding Club, St. Francis Social Club, and the YMCA Livestrong program. She was involved in the Oak Hills Neighborhood Association and enjoyed many events including hosting progressive dinner parties and organizing activities with close friends. We can see why she was called the social director among her friends! She also loved to travel and explore new places, which took her to many places both within North America and Europe, with her most recent trip being to western Canada at the age of 84.

What brought her the most joy was spending time with her children and six grandchildren. She loved hearing about their life, college plans, travel experiences and meeting their friends. Planning trips to NYC with her children and grandchildren to see a Broadway show and have a fun dinner gave her much pleasure. Family and extended family get-togethers at Bethany Beach, Delaware also brought her great joy and gave us all special memories that will live on.

Although ALS is a difficult disease, our mom was realistic about the prognosis and continued to try to live life to the fullest. We saw her handle this disease with grace, strength and dignity. The support she received from family and friends meant so much to her during this difficult time. The cards, prayers, emails and visits gave her hope and strength when she needed it most.

Kathleen was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, John (d. 2013), and her brother, Hugh Gerald Smith. She is survived by daughters Kathleen Bailer (Bill), Susan Savino (Carl), Elizabeth Mahon (Antonio Fiol Silva), son Robert (Karen Kosisher), nephew Donald Smith, and grandchildren Carson and Kate Bailer, Andrew Savino, Antonio and Alexandra Fiol-Mahon, and Jack Mahon. She is also survived by her sister Maureen Politi, many nieces and nephews, and wonderful friends whom she cherished.

Visitation will be on Friday, August 16, 2019 from 8:30-9:45am at Costello-Runyon Funeral Home, 568 Middlesex Avenue, Metuchen, followed by a 10:15am Funeral Mass at Cathedral of St. Francis of Assisi, Metuchen.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution to the ALS Association (alsa.org), Gift Processing Center, PO Box 37022, Boone, IA 50037-0022
