Lucy May (Groesbeck) Carey
Lucy G. Carey, 94, of Phoenix, Arizona and formerly of Menlo Park Terrace, New Jersey passed away peacefully on January 4, 2019. She is survived by her three sons Joseph Carey of Scottsdale, AZ, Brendan Carey of Tucson, AZ and Patrick Carey of Port Townsend, WA. She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph Carey.
She was born in Hebron, New York to Edward J. Groesbeck and Florence L. Sears. She met and married her husband Joseph Carey while both served in the US Army. Lucy is a WWII era veteran and supported the war effort as an aircraft electrician and mechanic in 1944-1945. She was honorably discharged in 1947.
Lucy and her husband Joseph owned and managed the White Birch Inn that formerly occupied the land at the SW corner of US Route 1 and Ford Ave. in Woodbridge Township until his passing in 1970.
Lucy shortly thereafter moved to Florida (Miami and St. Petersburg) before permanently moving to Phoenix, Arizona to be near her three sons around 1990.
A funeral Mass will be held at The Church of Our Lady of the Angels (Franciscan Renewal Center), 5802 E Lincoln Dr. Scottsdale, Arizona on Friday January 11, 2019 at 4 PM.
Lucy is being transported back to New Jersey where she will be interred with her husband Joseph at St. Gertrude’s Roman Catholic Cemetery, Colonia, New Jersey.
A viewing will be held on Sunday, January 13, 2019 from 5-7 pm at Costello-Runyon Funeral Home, 1225 Green St. Iselin,. A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, January 14, 2019, at 10 am at St. Cecelia’s Catholic Church, 45 Wilus Way, Iselin, followed by the interment in the cemetery.
