Maureen Anne O’Brien (Holmes), 60, of Metuchen, passed away peacefully at home on January 17, 2019.
Born in Newark to Herbert Holmes and the late Kathleen Holmes; she grew up in Newark and Union and has lived in Metuchen for the past 25 years. She was a graduate of Kean College, pursuing both Bachelors and Masters degrees in Education/Reading. Maureen was a dedicated elementary school teacher at St. Helena’s in Edison and previously, at St. Cecelia’s in Iselin. She began her teaching career at Connecticut Farms School in Union. She was a parishioner of St. Francis Cathedral in Metuchen and always lived her faith, never failing to do small acts of kindness for others.
Maureen enjoyed her trips to Cape May and Bermuda. Her favorite pastime was drinking tea while talking to and spending time with her cherished family & friends. She enjoyed the beauty of Irish crystal, watching old movies, and listening to Billy Joel.
Maureen is survived by her husband of 33 years, James “Jim” O’Brien; her daughter, Mary Kate and her husband Matthew; her son James Patrick “JP”; her father Herbert Holmes; two sisters, Kathy Tatsch and her husband Michael, & Eileen Kelly and her husband Myles; her aunt, Eileen Brady, & 5 nieces and nephews, Meghan, Jade, Connor, Kelly, and Erin; her father-in-law James O’Brien; brother-in-law Kevin O’Brien & his wife, Alisa; sister-in-law Tracey Owens & her husband, Steve; & brother-in-law, David O’Brien; and many dear friends.
The visitation will take place at the Costello-Runyon Funeral Home, 568 Middlesex Ave. Metuchen on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 from 2-4pm & 6-9pm and Thursday, January 24, 2019 from 9:45-10:30am. The funeral service will take place Thursday at 10:30am at the Costello-Runyon Funeral Home, Metuchen, followed by the entombment at Woodbridge Memorial Gardens.
