Mieczyslaw "Mietek" Kopec, 74, passed away, Monday, February 24, 2020 at his home in Metuchen, New Jersey.
Mietek was born September 26, 1945 in Pilzno, Poland to Antoni and Maria Kopec. He attended high school at Zamoyskiego w Lublinie and graduated with a degree in Engineering from Politechnika Krakowska w Krakowie (Crakow University of Technology) in 1976. On June 24, 1972 he married Janina Chytla and together, they created a wonderful life in Sanok. He worked as the Director of Emergency Medical Transportation for many years and was loved and respected in his community. He also worked as the town’s Director of Sanitation for many years and was loved and respected in his community.
Mietek always put his family first. After winning a lottery for a travel Visa in 1993, Mietek and Janina took a chance and moved to the United States from Poland in search of providing their children with better opportunities. No matter what challenges he faced, he always enjoyed helping and making people laugh and brought joy to whoever knew him.
He was an avid gardener and craftsman and enjoyed the simple things in life. He loved spending his weekends out in nature, from tending to his garden to day trips to the Delaware Water Gap. He also enjoyed taking pictures, watching old Westerns, cooking, and spending time with his children whenever he could.
Mietek is survived by his two children, Krzysztof and Katarzyna and his wife Janina. He will be laid to rest in Sanok, Poland next to his eldest son, Marcin, who passed at an early age. A memorial visitation will take place from 1-2:30 pm with a service at 2:30 PM, Saturday, March 7th at Costello Runyon Funeral Home, 568 Middlesex Ave, Metuchen, NJ 08840. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made for memorial services in the US and Poland.
