On July 28th, a breath after praying the rosary while surrounded at home by her loving children and loved ones, Patricia LaPointe went peacefully to her final homecoming in heaven.
Born on September 30, 1944 as the third child of Frank and Dorothy Poandl, Patty was a lifelong resident of Metuchen and devout communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral Parish, where she was baptized, married, and raised her family with her husband, Gerard. She graduated from Metuchen High School and St. Francis School of Nursing in Trenton. She went on to raise seven children, then embraced her vocation as nurse of St. Francis Cathedral School, retiring after almost 25 years.
Daily acts of kindness and a vivacious love for her family hallmarked Patty’s remarkable life. She loved being a member of the Companions of Pauline of the Sisters of Christian Charity, spending time with grandkids and family, and taking care of everyone in the neighborhood and beyond. Patty was renowned for “baking love” into pies, stollen, hot cross buns, rice pudding, and other specialties. She welcomed everyone to her table, making enough dinner for company and enjoying simple moments sharing at tea parties.
She is survived by her husband Jerry, as well as her children and their spouses: Christy McHale (Tom), Michael LaPointe (Christi Farina), Karen Capron (Frank), Bob LaPointe (Lauren), Janine Billman (Rich), Dorothy Sheker (Tom), and Daniel LaPointe (fiancée Toni).
Patty was “Mema” to 19 grandchildren: Julia, Brendan, Patrick, Colin (McHale), Frankie, Anna, Emma, Alana, Daniel (Capron), Sophia, Luke, Charles (LaPointe), Matthew, Michael, Kathryn (Billman), and Makayla, Daniel, Nathan, Caroline (Sheker).
She is also survived by her siblings and their spouses: Tom Poandl (Debbie), Dave Poandl (Pamela), Ed Poandl (Diane), Tina Soliman (Yasser), Bill Poandl (Mary Beth), Celeste Wisniewski (Ted), and brothers-in-law James Breen and Peter Freis, as well as many nieces, nephews, and so many people with whom she had a special bond of love.
In addition to her parents, our dear Patty was predeceased by her brother Fr. Bob Poandl, her sisters Elizabeth Breen, Kathleen Freis, Carol Trecolis, brother-in-law Peter Trecolis, and nephew Daniel Breen.
Patty had many favorite sayings - one of which was “flowers are for the living not for the dead” - so in lieu of flowers for Mom, and to help bring the “aroma of her presence” to Dan and Toni’s wedding, the family requests that you please consider sponsoring a bouquet or table arrangement in November. Alternatively, a donation in her name to support the mission work of the Sisters of Christian Charity would be welcome (350 Bernardsville Rd, Mendham, NJ 07945 https://scceast.org/donate ).
