Peter S. Rebovich, known to family and friends as "Mega", passed away peacefully at home on March 28, 2020, surrounded by his loving family. He was 83 years old.
Peter grew up in Fords, NJ, son of Joseph and Margaret Rebovich, younger brother of Joseph. He attended Woodbridge High School where he distinguished himself as an athlete, winning the New Jersey State Championship, Division IV, for pole vaulting. Peter was an Eagle Scout, and upon graduation enlisted in the US Army. He completed his training as a parachute jumper, spending most of his two year Army career in the 82nd Airborne Division in Fort Bragg, NC.
After leaving the Army, Peter graduated from Rider University and then earned a Masters Degree in Education from Rutgers University, after which he became a devoted Scarlet Knights fan for life.
Peter married Arlene Nudge in 1960 and together they raised four children. They would have celebrated sixty years of marriage this year.
Peter was a teacher both by vocation and nature. He worked in the Edison School District for over forty years as a teacher, vice principal and principal. There he made many lifelong friends and was a positive influence on generations of kids.
Peter was an avid sailor and overall lover of life. He was an active member and Past Commodore of the Raritan Yacht Club. Peter spent many summers sailing with his family and participating in local and offshore regattas on his Cal 40, Sinn Fein. A highlight of his sailing career was winning the Newport to Bermuda Race twice, in 2006 and 2008. He was proud to have his two sons, Mark and Peter, onboard.
Even after a rare disease rendered him unable to walk, he didn’t let that stop him. He could often be seen riding his scooter into town, going to the farmers market, patronizing the local restaurants in Metuchen, or simply riding over to Hailey’s for a beer.
Peter is survived by his wife Arlene and his children Mark (Krista), Susan Kacani, Amy Rouba, Peter (Linda), grandchildren Nadine and Nathaniel and his brother, Joseph W.
A memorial in celebration of his life will be held at a future date once social distancing restrictions have been lifted.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Peter’s memory to the Myositis Association, 2000 Duke Street, Suite 300, Alexandria, VA 22314.
