Salvatore Rappa, 95, entered eternal rest on Saturday, December 14, 2019 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Palermo, Italy, he came to the United States in 1924 moving to Irvington before settling in Metuchen in 1961. He was an active parishioner and previous member of the Choir of St. Cecelia’s RC Church in Iselin & 4th Degrees Knight in the Knights of Columbus. He proudly served in the US Army during WWII in the 35th Infantry Division, receiving the most prestigious honor of the Purple Heart. He was employed by Western Electric in Union before retiring in 1982. He served on the Board of Directors as secretary of the Advanced Financial Federal Credit Union for many years receiving Emeritus status. He loved to sing and dance, enjoyed taking cruises, being a proud Yankee baseball fan and supporting his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who affectionately called him Grape, Beeba and Gramps.
He is predeceased by his beloved wife, Louise (d 1992), fiancée, Joyce Sabba; parents Benedetto and Frances; & brother Charles.
He is survived by two children, Joseph of Brisbane, Australia & Donna Werdann & husband Michael, Sr of Metuchen; 4 grandchildren, Fiona & Candice, Frances Wood & husband Adam, & Michael Werdann, Jr. & wife Rachel; 5 great-grandchildren, Elijah & Noah Wood, Michael Werdann, III, Luna Kirra & Ace Travis; a sister Mary Weckstein of Woodbridge.
The funeral will take place on Friday, December 20, 2019 at 9:30 am from the Costello-Runyon Funeral Home, 1225 Green St. & Cooper Ave., Iselin with a 10:00 am Mass of Christian Burial at St. Cecelia’s RC Church in Iselin. Interment will take place at St. Gertrude Cemetery in Colonia.
Visitation will be on Thursday from 2 - 4 & 7 - 9pm.
