William J. Verbist, 87, of Edison, died on Sunday, April 8, 2018, at Hackensack Meridian Health Raritan Bay Medical Center in Old Bridge.
Born in Hoboken & raised in Jersey City, he moved to Metuchen in 1962, and has been in Edison for the last 22 years. He attended Dickinson HS and Pace University. He worked as an insurance agent for over 40 years. He was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral in Metuchen, & was a Knight of Columbus of Council #9199 of Our Lady of Peace Church in Fords. He volunteered for Meals on Wheels. He started a music program for local seniors which was held at the North Edison Library. He enjoyed going to the Edison Senior Center. He was a member of the Sons of Norway in Marlboro. He enjoyed fishing, music, playing the guitar, but mostly spending time with his grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Rosemary B. (nee Morley) Verbist; his parents, John & Claudine; and a brother, Jack.
He is survived by his son, William A. Verbist and his wife Orsola of Hillsborough; his daughter, Pamela Verbist Smith and her husband Robert J. Jr. of Edison; & 5 grandchildren, Andrew, Ryan, & Christopher Smith, & Gwendolyn and Miranda Verbist.
The funeral will be held on Friday, April 13, 2018, at 9:45 am from the Costello-Runyon Funeral Home, 568 Middlesex Avenue, Metuchen followed by a 10:30 am Mass of Resurrection at Our Lady of Peace Church, 630 Amboy Ave, Edison. Interment will be in Resurrection Burial Park, Piscataway.
Visitation will be on Thursday from 4-8 pm.
