Dr. Emery Konick, Jr., 78, passed away Sunday, May 20, 2012 at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital, New York.
Born in Perth Amboy, he was raised in Woodbridge. He moved to Edison in 1962.
Dr. Konick graduated from Woodbridge High School in 1951. He received a Bachelor's Degree in Education from Rutgers University, a Master's Degree from Seton Hall University and a Doctorate Degree in Education from Rutgers University.
He was employed for the past 22 years as the State Executive Assistant to the State Business Administrator in the Jersey City Public School District.
Dr. Konick was also a longtime employee of the Woodbridge Township School District, starting in 1956 as a Social Studies Teacher at Woodbridge High School and retiring in 1989 from the position of Assistant Superintendent-Business.
Dr. Konick wrote the sports column "Konick's Corner". He started his sports writing career in 1952 for the Perth Amboy Evening News. He also wrote for the Daily Home News, Atom Tabloid, and most recently, The Home News Tribune, from 1989-2009.
Dr. Konick was actively involved in the New Jersey Sports Writers Association. He was president from 1990-2011, on the Board of Govenors from 1979-1990 and treasurer from 1958-1979.
He was predeceased by his mother, Julia (nee'Fenenic), father Emery Sr., sister Irene and brother Michael.
Surviving are his loving wife Sophia, son Kevin, daughter Karin and her husband Richard, and two grandsons, Matthew and Ryan. Also surviving are his brother John and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will take place Wednesday May 23, 2012 at 9:45am at Costello-Runyon Funeral Home, 568 Middlesex Ave.(Rt.27) Metuchen (costello-runyon.com) followed by a 10:15am Funeral Mass at St. Francis Cathedral, Metuchen.
Interment will be at Holy Trinity Cemetery, Perth Amboy.
